Cryospray is a lightweight, portable, self contained unit designed to freeze tissue to temperatures of -59 degrees. Cryospray is based upon the principle that living cells which are rapidly frozen are firstly injured and subsequently die from the effects of the freezing. To avoid possible damage to healthy skin it is recommended that the skin surrounding the area to be treated is protected. For example, by applying a smear of petroleum jelly. There are 3 methods of application available, spraying, probe and drops. After treatment you can apply 20% silver nitrate solution to the treated area. This minimises any blistering which may occur and secondly makes the appearance of the area more acceptable to the patient. Cryospray must not be used on broken skin.
